BOSTON, Mass. - Junior runner Patrick Mellea made history Friday night at the BU Invitational by running the fastest one-mile time in Boston College history. Running against a field of over 125, Mellea came in second with an astonishing time of 4:03.26. This mark betters the 4:04.60 time set by former Eagle Tom Horton at the 1980 New England Championships. Having bested Horton's 27-year-old record Mellea now ranks first in school history in the mile run and fifth in the 3000m run.
Representing more good news for track and field, Boston College welcomed back junior runner Jeremy Zagorski, who ran the mile after 20 months off due to injury. Zagorski won his heat with an impressive time of 4:15.74.
In the 3000m run, senior captain Mark Alizzi won the second heat to finish 8th overall with a time of 8:18.30. This time places Alizzi 10th in school history in the 3000m. In the same event, BC got strong performances from sophomores Tim Ritchie (8:24.04) and David Emerson (8:28.76). Both runners enjoyed personal-best times and qualified for the IC4A Championships.
Up next for track and field is the ACC Championships at Clemson University February 22-25.
