CHESTNUT HILL, MA - The Boston College women's basketball team is now 6-2 on the season. The Eagles defeated Holy Cross on Tuesday, 77-58, behind 22 points and 11 rebounds from freshman Stefanie Murphy. It was Murphy's fifth double-double of the season.
Boston College will host Rhode Island on Saturday, Dec. 8 at 2 p.m. (Conte Forum). It will be the Eagles third game in eight days.
BC vs. URI
The Eagles and Rams have not played since 1983 when BC defeated URI, 73-48. Elizabeth (Biz) Houghton led the Eagles with 17 points ... URI leads the series, 6-3 ... Last season Boston College played in a tournament hosted by URI, but the two teams never met ... BC will notice a familiar name on the URI roster as former Eagles center Jamie Cournoyer's younger sister, Erin plays for the Rams ... Former URI men's basketball standout Tom Garrick is the head coach of the Rams.
Winning Ways
The Eagles are currently on a four-game win streak. It is the first time since the 2005-06 season the Eagles have won four straight game. Last season the Eagles longest winning streak was three games (Fairfield, Hly Cross, UNH).
In the four-game streak, Murphy has averaged 23.3 ppg and 11.3 rebounds. She is shooting 66 percent from the field. Other key players in the run have been Carolyn Swords, who is averaging 15.8 ppg and shooting 71 percent from the field and guard Mickel Picco, who is shooting 63 percent from the 3-point arc (8-for-12) and averaging 8.8 ppg.
Double-Trouble
Murphy earned her second consecutive ACC Rookie of the Week honor for her play last week. The 6-foot-4 forward from New Hampshire averaged 23.6 ppg and 11.3 rpg as the Eagles captured three straight victories. She was also named the MVP of the Mildred & Ralph L. White Invitational at Northwestern. Murphy is currently second in the ACC in scoring with a 19.3 scoring average. She is also the second leading rebounder in the conference with a 10.6 average.
