AMHERST, Mass. - Junior Nathan Gerbe scored a power-play goal and freshman goalie John Muse made 37 saves to lead Boston College in a 1-1 tie against Massachusetts before 7,319 fans in the Mullins Center.
After a scoreless first period, Gerbe put BC on top 1-0 with a man-advantage goal just 51 seconds into the middle period. Sophomore Ben Smith and freshman Joe Whitney assisted on the score.
The Eagles nearly doubled their lead twice in the middle period. Junior Andrew Orpik wrapped around the net and stuffed the puck past UMass goalie Paul Dainton, but referee Scott Hansen ruled the goal had been dislodged just prior to the puck crossing the goal line. Later in the same period, while playing shorthanded, senior Dan Bertram took a feed from Gerbe and rifled a shot that struck the left post.
UMass (4-2-4, 2-1-4 Hockey East) evened the score at 1-1 on senior Mike Kostka's power-play goal with just 1:16 left in the second period.
UMass enjoyed a 15-8 shot advantage in the first period, and a 14-10 edge in the second period. BC outshot the host Minutemen, 14-6, in the third period. Each team recorded three shots in the overtime session.
UMass freshman goalie Paul Dainton finished with 34 stops.
Game Notes: Freshman defenseman Nick Petrecki missed the game because of illness. Because of his absence from the line-up, BC dressed 13 forwards and five defensemen ... The two teams will meet again on Saturday night (Nov. 17) in Kelley Rink. Game time is 7 p.m. ... Tonight's game marked the Eagles' fifth tie of the season, and only the fifth season in school history that BC has tied five (or more) times in a single-season. The school record for ties in one season is seven (set in 2004-05).
