Chestnut Hill, Mass. - Senior Joe Rooney and freshman Carl Sneep each scored short-handed goals and Kyle Kucharski netted the gamewinner to lead seventh-ranked Boston College to a 3-1 Hockey East victory over Providence College before 5,277 fans in Conte Forum.
BC junior goaltender Cory Schneider recorded his 10th victory of the season, making 35 saves.
After Brian Boyle was penalized just one minute into the game, the Eagles scored on a two-on-one break, with a diving Rooney redirecting Benn Ferriero's pass into the back of the net at 1:21.
BC (10-6-1, 7-4-1 Hockey East) doubled its lead in the second period - at 2:59 - when Kucharski beat Providence College goalie Tyler Sims for his first collegiate goal off a feed from Ben Smith. Sneep's first collegiate goal increased the BC lead to three goals just more than five minutes later at 8:21.
PC freshman Mark Fayne trimmed the margin to 3-1 at 15:38 of the second period, but Schneider stopped the visitors' final 12 shots in the third period to preserve the victory.
The Friars (4-15-1, 3-9-1 HE) outshot the Eagles, 36-17, including an 18-3 advantage in the middle period.
PC's Sims stopped 14 shots in 58:25.
Game Notes: Joe Rooney's short-handed goal marked his second in as many games ... Nathan Gerbe returned to the BC lineup and centered BC's second line after having missed one game while participating in the 2007 World Junior Championships in Sweden ... Freshman Matt Price, who was playing in his fourth straight game, joined Gerbe on the second line and recorded three shots from his left wing position ... BC scored two short-handed goals for the first time since March 25, 2006, when Joe Rooney netted two against Boston University in the NCAA Northeast Regional final, a 5-0 BC win.
