Men's Skiing Opens Season at UConn Carnival

CRANMORE, N.H.- The Boston College men's ski team placed first in the giant slalom race on Thursday, Jan. 11 and finished in second place in the slalom competition of the UConn Carnival on Friday, Jan. 12. The Eagles placed three skiers in the top nine of both the giant slalom race and the slalom portion.
On Thursday, Senior Gregory Avallon finished third in the giant slalom race with a total time of 2 minutes 7.92 seconds, freshman Stephen Fiorella finished a place behind, in fourth, with a time of 2:08:48, and sophomore Andrew Simmons placed seventh, with a time of 2:09:93.
In the slalom race on Friday, Gregory Avallon took fifth place, with a total time of 1:27:72. Senior Thatcher Merrill and freshman John Ramer placed seventh and eighth, respectively, for the Eagles.
Boston College placed first overall in the giant slalom race, with an overall team time of 647.26 seconds. The Eagles finished 3.12 seconds ahead of second-place finisher, Colby/Sawyer College. Plymouth State University, University of Massachusetts, and Massachusetts Institute of Technology rounded out the top five, respectively.
In the slalom race, the Eagles placed second overall with a team time of 449.88 seconds. Plymouth State University finished first, 4.94 seconds ahead of the Eagles. University of Massachusetts, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Colby/Sawyer College were again in the top five.
"I'm very excited about the win and the results show me that this team is very deep," Head Coach Peter Endres said. "I'm convinced that the team can go out and win on any day. Some of our freshmen really stepped up and filled in for guys who didn't finish. That's what gave us such a strong result."
The races, originally scheduled for Friday and Saturday, were pushed ahead one day because of snow conditions.
The men's ski team, which now leads the Eastern Collegiate Ski Conference, returns to the slopes on Saturday, Jan. 20, for the Plymouth State University Carnival in Waterville Valley, N.H.
