Bronx, N.Y. - The Boston College Eagles men's cross country team competed at the Iona Invitational on Saturday against 19 other school in the Bronx, N.Y. The team finished third overall with a score of 93. Boston College finished behind the fifth-ranked Iona Gaels (26 points) and Brown (66 points). Harvard and the University of Massachusetts-Lowell rounded out the top five schools.
Two Eagles placed in the top seven, as junior Patrick Mellea placed fourth overall in the 8,000-meter event with a time of 24:53, the fastest time for a Boston College runner at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx in over a decade. Senior co-captain Mark Alizzi was seventh, crossing in 25:09. Freshman Jordan Peeples had an impressive showing, finishing in 25:47 for 25th place, while junior Josh Springer was 27th with a time of 25:47. Rounding out the Eagles were sophomore David Emerson, who placed 30th with a time of 25:51 and sophomore James LaGreca who was 32nd, crossing in 25:59.
Two of the men's top five runners (sophomores Timothy Ritchie and Cory Ahern) did not run and will race at the New England Championships next week and the following week at the Pre-National Meet. The top five from this week will skip the New England Championships and race at the Pre-National Meet. The New England Championships will be held at Boston's Franklin Park on Saturday, October 7 at 1 p.m.
