Women's Soccer Drops 1-0 Marathon Match to Duke
September 29, 2006 | Women's Soccer
The Boston College women's soccer team dropped a heartbreaker, 1-0, as Duke (6-4-1, 2-1-0 ACC) scored with a minute in the match on Thursday night. The match, an ACC battle, seemed like it would never end as there were two lightening delays. Overall, the match lasted three hours and 37 minutes.
Duke's goal was scored with 1:03 to play as freshman KayAnne Gummersall headed in the game-winner. It was the first time the Blue Devils got a shot off in the box.
"We had more dangerous chances and our defense was solid. They kept Duke outside all night and never let them slide behind the defense,'' said BC coach Alison Foley. "It's unfortunate that a questionable call in the 89th minute decided the game.''
The Eagles (7-3, 1-1 ACC) could only muster six shots in the game, only two in the second half. Junior forward Kia McNeill, who leads the league in scoring with 20 points, was held in check as she did not get a shot off all game. The Eagles second-leading scorer Gina DiMartino had two shots but both were turned away.
Both teams battled in the first half but it would be BC with the best chance. Freshman Melissa Gimpel broke in free but was tripped on the play and it went without a call. Both teams has four shots on goal but the four from the Blue Devils came in the final two minutes of the half and from outside the box.
After an hour and 55 minute delay due to lightening, play resumed after halftime.
BC continued to press on offense and created some solide chances but could not convert. The Blue Devils outshot the Eagles 9-5 but most of the shots remained from beyond the 18-yard box.
With inclement weather returning, play was once again delayed for 31 minutes
With less than two minutes remaining, Boston College was called for a foul seven yards outside of the box on the left side. Moros sent a free kick at the net which Gummersall headed in from three yards out.
The 25th ranked Eagles will travel to Winston-Salem and play 12th ranked Wake Forest on Sunday, October 1 at 1 p.m.
