Boston College senior midfielder Jenny Maurer (East Longmeadow, Ma) had one goal and two assists to lead the Eagles to a 4-2 win over the University of Rhode Island tonight in a non-conference match. Boston College improves to 6-2, while URI is now 3-6.
Boston College will open up ACC action on Sunday, Sept. 24 as the Eagles host Clemson at 1 p.m. at the Newton Soccer Field.
Down 1-0, junior Kia McNeill (Avon, CT) tied the game in the 15th minute of play as she knocked home a loose ball in front of the goal. McNeill was not done for the night as she gave Boston College a 2-1 lead in the 28th minute. The junior forward was the beneficiary of a great play by Maurer. The speedy midfielder took the ball from 25 yards out and broke through two URI defenders. Maurer's shot was blocked but she pounced on the loose ball and placed it right in the box for McNeill (six goals on the season) to put home for a 2-1 Boston College lead.
With three minutes left in the half, URI's Amy Cochran (Keene, NH) would pick up a loose ball in the box to tie the game at the half.
Boston College continued to pressure the URI defense in the second half. The Eagles out-shot URI 8-5 in the half and 17-11 in the game.
Junior Tara Luciani would benefit from a great play by Maurer again. Maurer drilled a hard shot to goal and Luciani punched in the rebound for a 3-2 lead 10 minutes into the second half. Maurer would then give Boston College an insurance goal when she ripped a shot from just outside the box for a 4-2 Eagles lead.
Maurer now has three goals and five assists, while Luciani now has four goals on the season.
Boston College goalkeeper Arianna Criscione (Walnut, CA) had four saves, while Rams keeper Amanda Thomas (State College, PA) had seven.
