CHESTNUT HILL, MA - Boston College women's soccer team, the 10th ranked team in the country, cruised to a 4-0 victory over Northeastern University in a non-conference game at the Newton Soccer Complex tonight. It was the home opener for Boston College as the Eagles improved to 2-1 on the season. Boston College will host Sacred Heart on Wed., Sept. 6. Sunday's game vs. Holy Cross will be rescheduled.
Senior Jenny Maurer (East Longmeadow, MA) notched three assists in the game, while junior Kia McNeill (Avon, CT) and freshman Gina DiMartino (Bethpage, NY) each had a goal and an assist. Senior goalkeeper Arianna Criscione (Walnut, CA) earned her first shutout of the season and had three saves.
BC opened up the scoring just 10 minutes into the game as junior Tara Luciani (Calgary, Alberta) scored off a cross from McNeill. Ten minutes later, the Eagles went up 2-0 as Maurer fed freshman Kelly Henderson up the sideline. Henderson chipped the ball towards the goal and DiMartino ran onto the loose ball for an open net goal. It was DiMartino's third goal of the season in three games.
Northeastern only three shots came in the first half but the story for the Huskies was goalkeeper Annie Petrofsky (Sudbury, MA). The junior kept her team in the game with four huge saves in the first half and 11 in the second half for a total of 15 for the game.
Though Boston College scored two more goals in the second half, Petrofsky made a number of point blank saves on McNeill, Luciani and DiMartino to keep the Huskies within reach.
The Eagles struck early again in the second half as senior midfielder Heather Ferron (Brookefield, WI) started the attack by sending Maurer to the left corner. Maurer carried the ball further downfield and struck a low cross into the box. McNeill dummied the ball and Ferron placed the ball by a diving Petrofsky for her first goal of the season just two minutes into the half.
McNeill would score her first goal of the season on a rebound in the box after DiMartino drilled a shot that Petrofsky kicked out. McNeill now has one goal and three assists on the season.
