Boston College women's soccer team suffered a 1-0 overtime loss to Boston University in the season opener at Nickerson Field. The Eagles, ranked 10th in the nation, will travel to Central Connecticut State on Sunday for a 3 p.m. game.
At the end of regulation, Boston College outshot the Terriers, 6-3. The problem was the Terriers controlled most of the play late in the second half, which carried over into overtime.
The Terriers scored in the 96th minute on a blast from freshman Farrell McClernon from just outside the 18-yard box to the left of BC goalkeeper Arianna Criscione.
The first half Boston College had a number of great chances. Senior Jenny Maurer fired two shots from just outside the box but both were easily handled by BU goalkeeper Stephanie Dreyer.
The Eagles best chance came in the final seconds of the half when freshman Melissa Gimpel picked up a loose ball in the box. Gimpel's shot flew over Dreyer, who came out to cut the angle on the BC freshman. With a very little space for a shot, Gimpel's shot sailed over the crossbar.
In the second half, Boston College almost went up early on when Tara Luciani was sent in the box by a through ball from Maurer. Luciani attempted to chip the ball over Dreyer but the Terrier goalkeeper deflected the attempt.
BU carried the play in the final 15 minutes of the half. The Eagles defense came up big when Kerri McNicholas cleared a loose ball from the goal line in the 66th minute to keep the game knotted at 0-0.
