PAT'S PEAK, N.H. - The Boston College men's ski team finished fifth in the slalom competition at the Colby-Sawyer/St. Anselm's Carnival on Saturday, Feb. 18. BC's fifth-place slalom finish solidified the team's fourth-place conference standing, earning the squad a trip to next weekend's Eastern Collegiate Ski Conference (ECSC) Regionals.
Junior Greg Avallon turned in a fifth-place overall performance in the slalom event, posting a total time of 1:31.48. Avallon, a resident of Beverly, Mass., finished third overall in the men's regular-season individual standings.
The men's team earned a fourth-place finish in the ECSC's regular-season standings after turning in a third-place finish in Friday's giant slalom event and fifth-place performance in Saturday's slalom competition.
"Under some stiff competition, the men skied solid and secured a spot at regionals," first-year head coach Peter Endres said. "Individually, some of the men are really stepping it up toward the end of the season. Greg Avallon may be skiing some of his best both in giant slalom and slalom. Thatcher Merrill, Andy Wallman and Andrew Simmons are also skiing fast, and if these men are able to put it together as a team, they'll be in a position to score very well at Regionals and Nationals."
Plymouth State captured first place in Saturday's slalom competition, as Massachusetts, Colby-Sawyer and Babson rounded out the top four.
The ECSC's top five teams - Plymouth State, Colby-Sawyer, Massachusetts, Boston College and Babson - qualify for the ECSC Regionals, which will take place on Saturday, Feb. 25 (slalom) and Sunday, Feb. 26 (giant slalom). The top five teams from the ECSC Regionals qualify to race in the United States Collegiate Ski and Snowboard Association (USCSA) National Championships in Sugarloaf, Maine from March 6-11.
