State College, PA - Penn State ended 13th-ranked Boston College women's soccer season Sunday afternoon at the Nittany Lions' Jeffrey Field in State College. PSU defeated the Eagles, 1-0, and will move on to the round of eight against Notre Dame.
The Eagles (13-6-3) out shot PSU, 12-8, and out cornered the Nittany Lions, 2-1, but both teams had their share of offensive sparks. Twelve minutes into the game, Jessie Davis took a free kick for the Nittany Lions from the left of the goal, which created the first PSU scoring opportunity. Sheree Grey and Aubrey Aden-Buie both got shots off, but both were deflected by Boston College defenders.
Kia McNeill took a fast breakaway up center field just minutes later. McNeill, along with PSU goalkeeper Kate Milstead and a Nittany Lion defender, went down on the shot on goal. McNeill quickly scrambled up to push the rebound to freshman Gina DiMartino on the right wing, who just missed a shot wide left.
At the end of the first half, momentum swung back in PSU's favor, with a shining opportunity coming off the foot of Katie Schoepfer who missed wide right on an empty net after Boston College sophomore goalkeeper Sarah Buonomo came out to make another save. Grey also missed high on a breakaway shot before the end of the half.
PSU didn't miss a step after the intermission, scoring at 38:34 into the half. After taking two consecutive corner kicks, Sarah Dwyer passed up to Aubrey Aden-Buie who rolled the ball into the lower left corner of the net for her 12th goal of the season. BC found themselves in a one goal hole for the first time during this year's NCAA Tournament.
At 31:40 Aden-Buie had another golden opportunity to score as she streaked up midfield to go one-on-one with Buonomo. Aden-Buie waited a moment too long to take the shot and subsequently gave Buonomo the opportunity to make the stop and keep the Eagles in the game. Sixteen minutes later, almost the exact same situation played out, ending with a Buonomo save and Aden-Buie on the ground.
The Eagles played furiously in the last 10 minutes to try to notch the tying goal. Sophomore Caitlin Hiler took a shot with about six minutes remaining and hit the crossbar. Two consecutive corner kicks resulted from the play, but Boston College couldn't follow through with its chances.
Boston College finished the game with the advantage in shots on goal, 8-6, and in corner kicks, 9-4. Buonomo made five saves while her counterpart Milstead made eight saves.
