Piscataway, N.J.--For the third time this season, junior forward Kia McNeill notched two goals for the Eagles to lead 25th ranked women's soccer to a 3-0 NCAA victory over Boston University on the Rutgers campus. Freshman Kelly Henderson scored the third Boston College goal to ensure the win and the Eagles improve to 12-6-2 on the season.
Boston College had the first opportunity to score around the 25:00 mark when freshman Gina DiMartino sent a cross from the right side to Henderson. Henderson's shot on goal was deflected out of bounds by a defender. On the subsequent corner kick, senior Laura Georges headed the ball over the net.
Less than a minute later, McNeill took a break away straight up the center of the field for a one-on-one opportunity with Terrier goalkeeper Stephanie Dreyer. Dreyer dove to the ground covering the ball and made the huge save to preserve the 0-0 tie.
With 12:30 remaining in the half, sophomore Sarah Buonomo made her second save of the evening during a Boston University corner kick. Terrier Jennifer Herman shot a rocket from the right of the box, but it hit Buonomo right at chest-level.
McNeill struck for the first goal of the game at 37:36. DiMartino picked up a loose ball bouncing off defenders' feet from the right-side of the 18-yard box and took the initial shot. McNeill got a foot on the rebound to send a laser to the right of a diving Dreyer for the score. The half ended with the 1-0 Eagle lead. Boston College also held a 9-3 advantage in shots for the stanza.
In the opening five minutes of the second period, McNeill gave the Eagles a 2-0 cushion. Henderson got a head on a high ball and redirected it to McNeill who dribbled into the 18-yard box, eluding two defenders, and beat Dreyer to her right again with a long, hard shot. Less than two minutes later, Henderson registered the Eagles' third goal off a corner kick. The latter goal was unassisted.
Buonomo earned the shutout, her sixth of the season, and made three saves. Dreyer finished the game with seven stops in net. The Eagles outshot the Terriers, 16-4.
The Eagles will continue to the second round to play either Rutgers or Hartford Sunday at 2:00 p.m.
