Boston College, the No. 4 seed in the ACC, dropped a hard fought 2-1 match against No. 5 seed, Clemson today in Cary, North Carolina in the quarterfinals of the ACC women's soccer tournament. Boston College is now 11-6-2, while Clemson improves to 11-6-2.
Clemson would score the game-winner with four minutes to play in the match. The Tigers Meghan Smith broke through the BC defense off a flick from Molly Franklin. Smith broke in and sent a shot to the right of a diving Eagles goalkeeper Sarah Buonomo (two saves).
The Eagles controlled the first 15 minutes of the game but could only manage one shot by freshman Kelly Henderson, which went high over the crossbar.
At 34:22, Clemson's Julie Bolt split two Eagle defenders and like the game-winner, placed it by a diving Buonomo. Though the Eagles led in shots taken in the first period, 5-3, the score at the half was 1-0 Clemson.
The Eagles tied the match at 67:51 of the second half. Sophomore forward Brianna Wilson-Byrne (four goals) registered her fourth goal of the season off a pass from ACC Freshman of the Year Gina DiMartino (four assists). DiMartino collected the loose ball along the Tiger end line and fed the ball on goal where Wilson-Byrne, on the far post, deposited the ball into the back of the net.
Boston College out shot the Tigers, 15-5 and had the edge in corner kicks, 6-3.
