PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Sophomore Nathan Gerbe and junior Dan Bertram each tallied first-period goals, but Providence College scored three times in the second period and twice in the final frame to claim a 5-3 Hockey East victory over No. 3 Boston College before 2,177 fans in Schneider Arena on Halloween night.
The visiting Eagles (4-2-0, 1-1-0 Hockey East) scored one power-play goal and one even strength goal in the opening period for an early 2-0 lead.
Gerbe sent a backhanded shot along the ice and past Providence junior goalie Tyler Sims (26 saves) at 11:44. The power-play goal was assisted by senior Joe Rooney and sophomore Andrew Orpik.
Bertram doubled the BC margin on a partial breakaway less than five minutes later. Defenseman Mike Brennan sent a cross-ice pass through the neutral zone to Gerbe, who led a streaking Bertram into the Friars' zone. Bertram took a few strides and beat Sims at 16:39.
The host Friars (2-4-1, 1-1-1 HE) responded with three unanswered goals in the second stanza to claim a 3-2 advantage.
Providence seniors Jamie Carroll and Tony Zancanaro netted goals at 6:21 and 10:31, respectively, and sophomore Nick Mazzolini gave PC a 3-2 advantage with his second goal of the year at 16:42.
Sophomore Brett Motherwell tied the score on a wrap-around goal at 11:21 of the third period, before Carroll netted his second goal of the game - the gamewinner - at 18:14 to put PC up for good.
Matt Taormini scored an empty goal at 19:59 for the 5-3 final.
BC junior goalie Cory Schneider recorded a season-high 37 saves in the defeat.
Providence out shot BC, 42-29, including a 19-9 advantage in the third period.
