Boston College women's soccer team captured a very important ACC match in a 3-0 victory over North Carolina State today at the Newton Soccer Field. The Eagles are now 3-3-1 in the ACC and 9-5-1 overall, while NC State drops to 3-4-0 in the ACC and 8-5-2 overall.
No. 19 Eagles have three ACC games remaining and will get back on the field on Friday, Oct. 20 in Virginia to play the Cavaliers (7 p.m.). Boston College will then play at Virginia Tech on Sunday, Oct. 22 (1 p.m.) before closing out the season at home on Friday, Oct. 27 against Maryland (7 p.m.)
"We are very pleased with how we played today,'' said BC head coach Alison Foley. "NC State came to compete but we were able to establish a rhythm in the game and capitalize on our opportunities.''
Boston College got on the board early on freshman Gina DiMartino's 11th goal of the season. DiMartino received a pass from fellow freshman Kelly Henderson and too the ball down the left side of the NC State goal. DiMartino broke free from the defender and drilled a shot into the far post from 10 yards out for a 1-0 BC lead at 5:20 in the game.
The Eagles kept the pressure on through the half as junior Kia McNeill, sophomore Caitlin Hiler and senior Jenny Maurer all had solid chances at giving BC a two-goal lead.
In the second half, Boston College went up 2-0 at 48:47 in the second half. Brianna Wilson-Byrne was the recipient of great team play when she scored her second goal of the season. Sophomore Caitlin Burke sent DiMartino into the corner to the left of the NC State goal. DiMartino sent a ball into the box that went to the far post. NC State goalkeeper Megan Connors went up to punch the ball out away from an incoming McNeill but the ball wentto the far post and Wilson-Byrne calmly put the ball away for an Eagles 2-0 lead.
The third goal came at 57:59 when Boston College earned a corner kick to the left of the goal. Burke's corner kick went right into the box and defender Laura Georges headed it by the out-stretched hands of the NC keeper. It was Georges first goal of the season and second in her Boston College career.
Boston College out shot NC State, 26-6 and earned nine corner kicks to the Wolfpack's two. BC goalkeeper Sarah Buonomo had five saves, including a big save with 10 minutes to play to preserve her fourth shutout of the season. Connors, the NC State goalkeeper, had 10 saves in the game.
