The No. 19 Boston College women's soccer team fell to No. 2 North Carolina, 3-1, tonight in an ACC match. The Eagles are now 8-5-1 and 2-3-1 in the ACC, while North Carolina improves to 15-1 and 7-0.
"I thought we played really well tonight,'' said Eagles head coach Alison Foley. "Most teams would not respond like we did after giving up an own goal like that.''
The Tar Heels scored two goals in the final 10 minutes to put the game away. Yael Averbuch scored in the 81st minute and Heather O'Reilly punched home a penalty kick in the final minutes for the Tar Heels.
Carolina scored the first goal at 9:44 on an own goal. O'Reilly crossed the ball deep into the corner and a Carolina player ran by the ball and it bounced off an Eagles player and into the goal for a 1-0 lead.
Just 36 seconds later the Eagles responded as freshman Gina DiMartino notched her 10th goal of the season. DiMartino pounced on a ball outside the 18-yard box and went top shelf on Carolina goalkeeper Anna Rodenbough.
The Eagles return to action on Sunday, Oct. 15 and will host NC State at 1 p.m. at the Newton Soccer Field.
