CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - No. 11 women's soccer came away with a 2-0 victory on Sunday, September 11. Goals from junior Molly Dane and freshman Caroline Walden propelled the Eagles past Harvard. Junior Arianna Criscione came up big with a penalty kick save in the first half en route to her fourth straight shutout. The Eagles improve to 4-0-0 while the Crimson fall to 2-1-0.
Dane opened up the scoring at 11:58 in the first half. Sophomore Tara Luciani collected the ball and brought it into the six-yard box where she dished it off to Dane who slotted it into the far right corner for the game-winner. This is Dane's first goal of the season and her third career goal.
The second goal of the game came from Walden at the 54:05 mark. Junior Heather Ferron passed the ball off to Walden who made her way through the defense and placed it in the top right corner to cap off the scoring for the Eagles. This is Walden's second goal of the season.
Criscione made a crucial save in the 40th minute of the game. A foul was whistled in the box at 39:30, which resulted in a penalty kick. Harvard senior Sara Sedgwick stepped up to take the penalty kick and shot the ball hard and to the right. Criscione made a diving save to her left and knocked the ball down to preserve the shutout.
Harvard had one more chance to get on the board late in the second half when midfielder Jamie Greenwald attempted to cross the ball in front of the net to teammate Erin Wylie who was waiting at the six-yard box. McNicholas read the play and cleared the ball out of danger.
The Eagles defense of captain Lindsey McArdle, Laura Georges, Mary Schneck and McNicholas held the Crimson to three total shots. Sophomore Kara Succoso made her collegiate debut for the Eagles. She came in late in the second half and contributed on defense for the rest of the match. Succoso joined the team in the spring of her freshman year.
The Eagles play their first road game of the season this Wednesday, Sept. 14 at Brown University. Kick off is set for 7:00.
