Lacrosse Edges No. 12 Hofstra In Double Overtime, 8-7

Hempstead, N.Y. - Carley St. Lucia scored the game-winning goal with 1:37 left in the second overtime to lead the Boston College women's lacrosse team to an 8-7 win over No. 12 Hofstra on Saturday afternoon at the James M. Shuart Stadium. St. Lucia netted a game-high three goals in the victory for the Eagles.
In the first half, Hofstra (13-3) out-shot the Eagles 13-11. The Pride got on the board first at 26:42 to take an early 1-0 advantage.
The Eagles (8-5) answered at 22:10 when Katherine Wagoner notched her seventh goal of the season. Less than three minutes later, Hofstra took a 2-1 lead with a goal at 19:46.
After a scoreless 10 minutes of play, Wagoner scored her second goal of the game to even the score at two.
The Pride scored two straight goals, giving them a 4-2 lead with 6:34 remaining in the opening half.
Courtney Legath cut Hofstra's lead to one at 3:27 when she connected on a free position shot.
In goal, Courtney Zwirko stopped six shots on goal in the first half for the Eagles, while Lisa Papa also made six saves for the Pride.
The Eagles headed into halftime trailing, 4-3.
In the second half, Hofstra extended its lead to two at 29:09.
BC responded with consecutive scores. St. Lucia netted her first of the day at 24:32 and Susie Breaznell tied the game at five on a free position goal at 22:02.
The Pride had an answer at 17:17 when they found the back of the net on a free position shots.
Less than two minutes later, BC evened the score for the fourth time of the game.
Hofstra took a 7-6 edge with 8:36 remaining in regulation.
The Eagles would not quit as Breaznell forced overtime with her second goal of the day at 5:23.
After a scoreless first overtime, St. Lucia sent the gamewinner past Papa with 1:37 remaining in the second extra session. It is St. Lucia's second game-winning goal of the season.
Alana Vivolo dominated on the ground for the Eagles. The junior picked up a game-high four groundballs. Lizette Blohm controlled the draws for BC by winning a team-high three.
Zwirko finshed the game with a career-high 10 saves for the Eagles, while Papa made 10 stops also.
BC will host Harvard on Wednesday, April 27. The action starts at 4 p.m. at the Newton Campus Lacrosse Field.
