
Boston College Hockey Holds Annual Pike's Peak Banquet

The Boston College hockey team celebrated the 2004-05 season on Friday night with the 56th Pike's Peak Hockey Club Banquet at the Westin Hotel in Waltham, Mass. The Pike's Peak Hockey Club, the program's booster organization, sponsored the event. BC also recognized the 25th anniversary team of 1979-80 and the 50th anniversary team of 1954-55.
The team's three All-America selections - senior defenseman Andrew Alberts, junior forward Patrick Eaves and senior forward Ryan Shannon - shared the Norman F. Dailey Award as the team's most valuable player. Dailey was a goaltender on BC's 1949 national championship team.
Alberts, who earned All-Hockey East first-team honors, registered 16 points in 30 games this season. He scored four goals, including the overtime gamewinner against Maine in the Hockey East Tournament's semifinal round. He is now playing with the Providence Bruins of the American Hockey League. Eaves, the 2004-05 Hockey East Player of the Year, scored a team-high 48 points this season. He led the team with a plus-25 rating, while tying for the team lead with 19 goals. Shannon, who also earned All-Hockey East first-team honors, recorded 45 points in 38 games. He finished second in scoring among Hockey East leaders, totaling 30 points in 22 league games. Shannon, who is now playing with the Cincinnati Mighty Ducks of the American Hockey League, completed his collegiate career tied for 26th on the school's career scoring list with 150 points (in 154 games).
Senior goaltender Matti Kaltiainen and senior defenseman Taylor Leahy shared the John "Snooks" Kelley Memorial Award as the individuals who best typify Boston College hockey. Kelley was the legendary BC manager, player and coach.
Kaltiainen finished his senior season with a 12-6-3 mark and a league-low 1.80 goals against average. He completed his collegiate career with a remarkable 65 victories. Leahy, who had played in 55 games in his first three years with the Eagles, played in all 40 games in 2004-05. He finished the season with five points - one goal and four assists.
Senior forward Ryan Murphy earned the William J. Flynn Coaches Award, decided upon by head coach Jerry York and his staff. Flynn was a former BC student-athlete, faculty member, coach and athletics director.
Murphy registered 12 points - four goals and eight assists - in 40 games this season. Now playing with the Manchester Monarchs of the American Hockey League, he finished his career with 59 points in 156 games.
Sophomore forward Brian Boyle received the James E. Tiernan Award as the team's most improved player. Tiernan was the most valuable player in the 1956 Beanpot. Boyle tallied 27 points - 19 goals and eight assists - in 40 games this season. He earned All-Tournament honors in the Hockey East Tournament after recording four goals and two assists in four games. Last season, he notched eight points.
Freshman goaltender Cory Schneider earned the Bernie Burke Outstanding Freshman Award, named in honor of the former BC goalie and long-time freshman coach. Schneider finished his first season with a 13-1-4 record and a 1.90 goals against average. He earned Hockey East All-Rookie Team honors.
Senior goaltender Robbie Miller was presented with the Academic Excellence Award as the senior with the highest grade point average. Miller will graduate with a B.A. in English next month.
Matti Kaltiainen earned his second award of the evening when he was presented with the Academic Achievement Award, which is given to the player who best utilizes the academic resources available to the student-athletes.
Boston College finished the 2004-05 season with a 26-7-7 record. The Eagles captured both the Hockey East regular-season and tournament titles.
