Women's Soccer continued its unbeaten spring season, taking the soccer Beanpot on Saturday. Two ties and a win were enough to give BC the championship in an event where the Eagles did not concede a goal.
The day started slowly for BC with a 0-0 tie with Harvard. In a game that provided few opportunities on either side, the contest was played predominately in the midfield. The best chance of the game fell to Heather Ferron after a perfectly chipped through ball from fellow midfielder Jenny Maurer. Ferron timed her run impeccably to stay onside; however, her lobbed shot was turned away by the onrushing Harvard keeper, Katie Shields.
The second competition of the day was against Boston University. While experimenting with personnel, the Eagles' back line kept BU at bay. For the second straight game, BC came out with a 0-0 tie.
As Northeastern beat Harvard earlier in the day, BC went into the third and final game against the Huskies aware that the winner would take the Beanpot championship. The Eagles raised their game against Northeastern and pulled off a convincing 3-0 victory. BC opened the scoring early in the first period with a Jenny Maurer free kick. Maurer struck the ball from 20 yards out, the power was too much for the Northeastern wall and beat the outstretched keeper. BC went into halftime up 1-0.
In the second half, junior Katie McGregor proved her return to match fitness with an individual effort. McGregor turned quickly on the edge of the box, dribbled past the final defender before calmly slotting the ball past the keeper. A few moments later, Maurer sealed the contest with the best goal of the day. Maurer cut in from the left hand side and sent a curling shot from 25 yards out into the top corner of the net, leaving the keeper with no chance.
The Women's Soccer team hopes to continue their unbeaten spring season with a contest on the Newton Campus Soccer Field against South Shore Select (WPSL) at 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 16th.
