The women's track team finished sixth at the indoor Big East Championships this past weekend, collecting 53 points and more than doubling its score from last year's 11th-place showing.
Senior Maria Cicero scored 10 points for the Eagles while performing one of the weekend's most difficult doubles. The long-distance specialist competed in both the 3,000- and 5,000-meter events, finishing fifth and third, respectively. Cicero ran BC's fastest times of the year in both events, running the 3,000 in 9 minutes, 39.57 seconds and the 5,000 in 16:24.60.
Junior Laurel Burdick also excelled in the two long-distance races, coming in fifth in the 5,000 and sixth in the 3,000. Burdick accounted for seven points for the Eagles.
The BC relay teams scored 10 points for the Eagles, finishing third in the distance medley and fifth in the 4x800 meters. The distance medley team of Melissa Sherman, Alison Fogarty, Kathleen Smyth and Kristen Coon finished behind squads from Georgetown and Notre Dame. The 4x800 team ran a season-best 9:09.98, eclipsing BC's previous top mark by nearly 28 seconds.
Sophomore Julie Regan registered BC's top high jump of the season, marking 1.65 meters en route to a seventh-place finish. Senior Saki Sugano was third in the pole vault with a mark of 3.60 meters.
The Eagles saw three athletes finish in the top seven of the pentathlon, scoring a combined 10 points. Sophomore Kasey Hill was fourth overall with 3,519 points and finished second in the 60-meter hurdles. Seniors Liz Hassan and Jacqueline Tanzella were sixth and seventh overall, respectively. Hassan won the 800-meter run to earn 745 points.
BC will look to continue its success at next weekend's New England Championships in Boston, Mass.
