Football Letterman Jack Concannon Dies

John J. "Jack" Concannon, Jr., a Boston College football standout in the early 1960s and retired National Football League quarterback, died suddenly Monday at Newton-Wellesley Hospital. He was 62 years old.
Concannon played quarterback for the Eagles from 1961 to 1963 and also played baseball and basketball at BC. He was the 1963 recipient of the Scanlan Award, the highest honor bestowed upon a Boston College football player, as well as the George "Bulger" Lowe Award, presented by the Gridiron Club of Greater Boston to the outstanding player in New England. He won the 1962 Eddie O'Melia Memorial Trophy, presented by the Holy Cross Club of Boston to the outstanding player in the annual BC- Holy Cross football game. He was inducted in 1973 to BC's Varsity Club Hall of Fame.
Born in Boston and raised in Dorchester, he was a graduate of Matignon High School, Cambridge and Boston College, class of 1964. After graduation, he was the number one draft pick in the 1964 American Football League by the New England Patriots. He was the starting quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles (1964-66), Chicago Bears (1967-71), Dallas Cowboys (1972 and 1973), Green Bay Packers (1974), where he was the player's representative, and retired from the Detroit Lions (1975).
A member of the Screen Actors Guild, he performed in the original "M*A*S*H" movie as well as "Brian's Song". He was a devoted father and grandfather, coaching many of his children's youth sports teams. He was a ten-year resident of Waltham and formerly lived in Dorchester and Riverwoods, IL.
Concannon is survived by his wife, Ginny (Maguire) Concannon; son John J. III "Jack" and his wife Lauren of Hingham; daughter Christa and her husband Brian MacLean of Medfield; daughter Kelly and her husband Steven Cicchino of Unionville, PA and daughter Kara and her husband Michael Grasso of Gorham, ME, as well as 13 grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in Saint Brendan Church, 589 Gallivan Boulevard, Dorchester, Friday December 2 at 10 a.m. Relatives and friends are invited. Visiting hours are at Dolan Funeral Home, 1140 Washington Street, Dorchester Lower Mills, Thursday 4-8 PM. Interment will be at New Calvary Cemetery.
