Coral Gables, Fla. - The No. 10 women's soccer team defeated conference foe Miami, 2-0, on Thursday, Oct. 6 in Coral Gables, Fla. Sophomore Maddie Johnson notched her third goal of the season in the 19th minute, while junior Molly Dane provided the insurance goal in the 79th minute of the match. The Eagles are now 9-1-1 on the season and 3-1-0 in conference play, while the Hurricane's fall to 5-8-1 (0-5-0 ACC).
The game-winning goal came off a Jenny Maurer free kick at 18:25. The junior co-captain lofted the ball into the right side of the box where Johnson was able to get her foot on the ball and sneak it past Miami keeper Lauren McAdam. Johnson is currently on a three-game scoring streak and it also marks the third time the goal has been off a restart.
Dane tallied her second goal of the season at the 78:46 mark. Junior defender Mary Schneck took a throw-in from deep in the left corner. Sophomore Heather Ferron collected it and sent it into the box where Dane got the shot on net. The junior sent the ball into the right corner of the net.
Junior goalkeeper Arianna Criscione collected her ninth shutout of the season, making five saves on the night.
The defense of senior co-captain Lindsey McArdle, junior Laura Georges, Schneck and freshman Kerri McNicholas held the Hurricane offense to five shots on goal. The Eagles held the advantage in shots, 12-11, and corner kicks, 6-5.
The Eagles will remain in Florida as they will take on Florida State University on Sunday, Oct. 9 in Tallahassee, Fla. Kickoff is set for 1:00.
The Eagles return home on Thursday, Oct. 13, when they will host top-ranked North Carolina at 7:00 at the Newton Campus Field.
