Chestnut Hill, Mass. - The women's soccer team rose to No. 8 in the NSCAA rankings. The Eagles recorded two shutouts over the weekend, defeating Virginia, 1-0, and tying Virginia Tech, 0-0, in double overtime. The 12 shutouts recorded this season are the most on record for the Eagles in a single season. The Eagles also accomplished this feat in 1999. Boston College is currently 11-3-2 and 5-3-1 in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
Junior co-captain Jenny Maurer scored the crucial game-winning goal against Virginia in the opening minutes of the first half. Freshman Caroline Walden set up Maurer, who was waiting at the top of the 18-yard box. Maurer fired off a shot to the upper right corner that eluded Virginia goalkeeper Mallory Soldner.
In the Soccer America rankings the Eagles rank 13th and Soccer Buzz Magazine ranks them at 11. Boston College is one of five ACC teams ranked in the top 15 of the NSCAA rankings.
The Eagles currently sit atop the ACC standings in shutouts (12), while junior Arianna Criscione is tied for first in save percentage (.844) with Clemson's Ashley Phillips. Criscione also ranks 20th nationally with a .608 goals against average.
On Saturday, Oct. 29, the Eagles play in their last regular season match against Maryland. Kickoff is set for 5:00 p.m. On Nov. 2 the ACC playoffs will get underway in Cary, N.C. at the SAS Soccer Complex.
