Flushing, N.Y. - Freshman Lana Krasnopolsky won her singles draw at the USTA Invitational in Flushing N.Y. as the women's tennis team continued to have a successful fall season.
Krasnopolsky needed only straight sets to win her first two matches, 6-4, 6-1 over Tamara John from Cornell and 7-5, 7-5 over Janet Kim from Yale. The freshman would meet Ela Kaluder from the University of Arkansas, one of the top teams in the nation.
Krasnopolsky pulled out a victory over Kaluder and moved on to face Carol Salge from Clemson in the finals. Salge helped the Tigers reach the elite eight last season, but Krasnopolsky earned an impressive three set victory to win the draw.
Junior Lindsey Nash was also impressive for the Eagles, taking out a future ACC foe, Hampton Williams from Virginia in the first round. Nash cruised to the finals where she met Arkansas' Audrey Bordeleau. Nash fell to Bordeleau, but finished the tournament with a strong 3-1 record.
Szilvia Szegedi had a first round upset over the #112 player in the nation, Yulia Rivelis from UPenn. Freshman Dasha Cherkasov lost the first match of her draw, but rattled off three straight wins including an impressive 6-0, 6-1 win over Penn State's Andrea Niculescu.
Alina Sullivan had a 6-1, 6-2 win over Dartmouth's Ann Scott, and Sarah Svoboda also played well despite losing her opening match.
On the doubles side, Cherkasov and Krasnopolsky had wins over two formidable opponents in Michelle Mitchell and Yulia Rivelis from UPenn and Laura Ganzer and Megan McGavock from South Carolina.
The tandem of Gia Nafarrete and Nash went 1-1 against ACC opponents N.C. State and Virginia.
Overall, the Eagles went 19-10 in their second fall tournament of the season.
"It was nice to be playing on the third day of the tournament," head coach Nigel Bentley said. "We are off to a great start."
