The day began at 5:00 a.m. by loading the bus with all of our luggage to head to the airport for another early flight. We arrived at the airport for our flight at 9:00 a.m., only to find that it was delayed until 9:30. Fortunately, the airport had many shops and internet access to keep us occupied. The flight to Melbourne took only an hour or so and when we landed we drove about 45 minutes to our "accommodation" (what the Aussie's call hotels). Since only one room was ready when we arrived, we loaded all of our bags into that one room, and then we drove to lunch at the original Italian restaurant of a local Aussie chain - La Porchetta. We loaded up on pastas and salads before our second game in Australia, and our first game in Melbourne against Team Koala - the U-19 Australian team. We won 15-12! We dominated for most of the game, controlling the pace, and executing the strategies we had worked on all fall. We still weren't 100% sharp, but a lot of the rust from the first game in Adelaide was gone. Unfortunately we weren't able to maintain our focus and momentum for the entire 60 minutes, and allowed the Aussies to creep back in to the game during a 10 minute stretch in the second half. They were a skilled, aggressive team, ready to take advantage of any letdown on our part. By the time we all got back on the bus to head home, it was around 9:00 p.m. Since our day had started out really early, most of us were extremely tired. So, instead of heading out to another restaurant for dinner, we went to a grocery store to buy some food and snacks for a light dinner and ate in our rooms, which were more like small apartments, complete with full kitchens. All in all we had a nice first day in Melbourne and started off the 3-day tournament with a win.
