The Boston College women's soccer team tallied its second win of the season on Sunday against the University of Hartford Hawks. Boston College's Laura Georges scored the game-winner in the first half, and the defense made it stand by recording its second straight shutout.
With the victory, Boston College improves to 2-1-0 while Hartford drops to 0-2-1 overall on the season. The Eagles are still yet to play a BIG EAST team in the 2004 season.
Georges scored at 34:58 to put the Eagles on the board, her first goal of the season. Laina Ceddia and Kristin Goddard were credited with assists on the play. Boston College took the 1-0 lead heading into the half.
That lead was extended by a goal in the 53rd minute by Katie McGregor. She picked up an errant pass at the top of the 18-yard box and rifled home her first goal of the season.
The Eagles added their final tally in the 68th minute of play on a score from Maddie Johnson.
BC goalkeeper Kate Taylor was not forced to make a save while picking up the shutout victory. This was Kate's first solo shutout of 2004 as she shared the 3-0 blanking of Holy Cross with back-up keeper Elyse Meredith. Hartford keeper Liz Cook tied a career-high with 12 saves, including a diving stop on a penalty kick in the second half.
Creating offensive chances has been important for Boston College. In the game, they out-shot Hartford 29-2. and in their first three games, the Eagles have amassed 64 shots. That comes to an average of just over 21 shots per game.
Conversely, the Eagle defense has been strong as well, only allowing goalkeeper Kate Taylor to make three saves in 258 minutes of play this season. Much of that can be attributed to the ball-winning capabilities of sweeper Lindsey McArdle and Laura George's ability to get the ball out of the quickly and effectively.
The Eagles will take the field again on Friday at 4 p.m. at University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
