Worcester, Mass. -- The Boston College field hockey team posted a 3-2 non-conference win over Holy Cross Wednesday evening at the Hart Astro Turf in Worcester, Mass. With the victory, Boston College improves to 7-3 on the season. Holy Cross, which has dropped two straight for the first time all season, falls to 5-3.
Sara York (Watertown, Mass.) got the Eagles on the board first after she tipped a Sabrina Lazzari (Weston, Mass.) pass just over a diving Holy Cross goalkeeper in the 28th minute. Just over two minutes later, Crusader co-captain Cat Kerman blasted a shot past BC goalkeeper Jillian Savoy (Lexington, Mass.) to tie the game at one apiece. The two teams played evenly throughout the first half, both registering six shots on goal. The Eagles kept a slight edge on penalty corners (5-2), but the score remained 1-1 at the half.
In the second, BC freshman Crystal Frates (Woodstock, VT) put the visitors up 2-1 after she beat the HC goalkeeper on yet another pass from Lazzari. The Eagles then scored what proved to be the winning goal when Lazzari lifted a shot over Kuhn's head and into the back of the net to record her 11th goal of the season.
The Crusaders fought their way back into the game and cut the BC lead down to one when sophomore Tara Welch scored her eighth goal of the season off of a Kerman pass. Holy Cross had limited chances to find the equalizer, and the BC defense held on to keep the Crusaders at bay and close out the game.
The Eagles return to action Sunday when they host Brown at 1:00 p.m.
