A two-goal effort by sophomore midfielder Jenny Maurer put Boston College over Pittsburgh 4-1 on Sunday afternoon. The victory adds a win to BC's mark, making the Eagles 5-4-0 on the season. This also notches BC's first win in the BIG EAST conference, 1-2-0 overall.
Head Coach Alison Foley tallied her 100th win as a head coach (her 93rd with BC). The Kenne State graduate took the position in 1997 and went 9-6-2 in her first season at BC. In her eighth season, Foley looks to build on those 100 victories.
The Pittsburgh Panthers drop to 3-4-0 overall with the loss to the Eagles. Pitt's in-conference record falls to 0-2-0, tallying consecutive losses to Notre Dame and BC.
The scoring came early and often for the Eagles. Senior midfielder Laina Ceddia put up BC's first tally of the afternoon in the fifth minute. Maurer served up a nice ball for Ceddia who got her head on it. The bid sailed past Pitt keeper Jamie Pelusi to put BC up early.
The Panthers answered the goal with one of their own before the end of the first half. They equalized the game at one going into the 15-minute intermission.
The second half was all BC. They tied their most productive half of the 2004, tallying three goals against these Pittsburgh Panthers and also the Panthers of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
Maurer netted the game winner early in the second half. Freshman forward Nicole Reyes was fouled inside the 18-yard box and she was awarded a penalty kick for her effort. Maurer took the kick and hit it by Pelusi.
Kai McNeill scored next for the Eagles. She took a pass from Molly Dane, who was awarded with an assist on the play, and out it past Pitt goalkeeper for BC's third goal on the day.
Maurer struck again and put the nail in Pittsburgh's coffin. It is not often that a team is awarded two penalty kicks in one game. What is rarer is the fact that the same player, Nicole Reyes, was fouled in both cases. Maurer took the PK once again and reunited the ball with back of net.
After last game, BC goalkeeper Kate Taylor commented on the importance to getting wins in BIG EAST play to being to climb the ladder in the conference. This impressive win over Pittsburgh facilitates the Eagles first steps up that BIG EAST ladder.
Kate Taylor notched her fifth win of 2004 with the victory over Pittsburgh. Backup keeper Elyse Meredith saw action in the last ten minutes of play for the Eagles, her second appearance of 2004. Pitt keeper Pelusi drops to 3-4-0 on the year.
This Wednesday, the Eagles travel to Storrs, Connecticut to square off against BIG EAST rival UCONN. That contest is slated for a 7 p.m. start.
