First half goal by freshman Kia McNeill gave Boston College the 1-0 victory over cross-town rival Northeastern. The victory lifts BC to a 4-4-0 overall record. The Eagles remain 0-2-0 in BIG EAST play. The loss drops Northeastern to 6-2-1 and they remain untested in America East action.
The first half was dominated by Boston College. The Eagles began the match with possession and the ball did not leave Northeastern's half of the field until the five-minute mark.
BC took 10 shots in the half; six of which were saved the Northeastern goalkeeper Mariel Wilner. Because the ball was possessed by the Eagles for so much of the first 45 minutes, the Huskies were not able to get a shot off until the second half.
The lone goal of the game came in the 21st minute. Kia McNeill put her third shot of the night into the net on a Jenny Maurer corner kick. From the left side, Maurer hit a nice service into the box. McNeill kicked it with the side of her foot, over the head of Wilner and into the top right corner of the net.
McNeill's tally was her fourth goal of 2004. This brings her points total to nine - four goals and one assist.
The second half was less lop-sided. Northeastern kept the ball out of their zone and allowed BC only six shots in the half. Both teams were scoreless in the second half of play.
BC's best chance of the half came when freshman Nicole Reyes broke free from a defender and ripped a low-lining shot at the net. Keeper Wilner made a sliding save to prevent the goal; one of her eight saves on the night.
On the importance of this victory, Head Coach Alison Foley commented, "We wanted to make sure we started this part of the season with a win and we got a shutout. This will hopefully get us back to our winning ways after losing a few the hard way."
After the game, BC goalkeeper Kate Taylor commented on the status of the team at this point in the season: "We are playing well and the difference between a good team and a great team is getting the goals. We need to be a great team to go deep this year."
The Eagles travel to Pittsburgh to take on the Panthers this Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
