This afternoon Women's Soccer lost 2-0 to the #13 West Virginia Mountaineers. The victory notches West Virginia's second straight BIG EAST victory (2-0-0 in-conference) and improves the Mountaineers' overall mark to 7-1-0. Boston College drops to 3-4-0 and 0-2-0 in BIG EAST conference play.
Right from the start, BC knew they had an aggressive, physical team to contain. Throughout the game, both teams committed and received hard fouls. Once the smoke cleared, the teams combined for a total of 35.
West Virginia got on the board in the 30th minute as the Mountaineers were awarded a penalty kick. Junior Kanela took the shot on Eagle goalkeeper Kate Taylor. Kanela put the ball passed the right foot of Taylor and into the net for the game-winner.
In the second half, senior forward Kane found the net for West Virginia's second tally of the afternoon. A service from the left flank put the ball in the box and Kane, outside of the right post, scooped up the loose ball. She hit a hard shot into the bottom left corner of the net.
Although the Eagles did not score in the second half, they shifted the momentum from the 46th minute on. Even with the aggressive forwards of West Virginia, the Eagle midfield kept the ball out of BC's zone, not forcing Taylor to make a save in the second half.
To contrast, West Virginia goalkeeper Lana Bannerman was not forced to make a save in the first half, but made three in the second.
Sweeper Lindsey McArdle's performance in the second half stood out as she knocked down a few service balls that could have proved costly for BC.
BC's best chance to put one on the board came on a Katie Gallivan service in the 60th minute. Bannerman went out to the right flank to knock the ball down, but the deflection was picked up by a sprinting Heather Ferron. Ferron took a shot, but was unsuccessful in the attempt.
BC keeper Taylor made three saves and suffered her fourth loss of the season. She played tough in the net and helped jump-start the offense in the second half.
The Eagles host Northeastern this Thursday at 7 p.m. for the last game of their homestand before heading to Pittsburgh next Sunday.
