This afternoon, women's soccer lost a 1-0 contest to the Villanova Wildcats. A second-half tally by junior midfielder Kelly Breslin ended up being the game-winner as that was all it took to outscore the Eagles. The win lifts the Wildcats to a 6-1-0 mark, while improving them to 1-0-0 in the BIG EAST. The loss drops Boston College to 3-3-0 overall. The Eagles fall to 0-1-0 in conference play.
As had been the trend throughout the 2004 season, the Eagles out-shot their opponent by an impressive margin. In this game, the margin was 11 as BC put up 16 shots and Villanova only got off five goals.
The Wildcat goal came in the 61st minute when midfielder Stacia Hartung got free down the right flank. She beat her defender to the corner and served the ball into the box. Just inside the left side of the six-yard box, Breslin elevated and headed the ball into the top left corner of the net, just out of the reach of BC goalkeeper Kate Taylor.
BC created some great chances in the game. The standout opportunity of the first half came from junior forward Katie McGregor in the 19th minute of play. McGregor took a pass just inside the 18-yard box and wheeled around her defender. She shook herself free and launched a shot at the top right corner of the net.
The shot hit the crossbar and dropped straight down. Villanova goalkeeper Jillian Loyden grabbed the loose ball on the bounce and referee Jesus Zornoza called that it had not passed over the line, leaving the Eagles scoreless.
Late in the second half, as the BC offense was slowing down, Head Coach Alison Foley switched to a three-forward set. Sophomore Molly Dane moved to the third forward position and had the best chance of the second half.
With about eight minutes left on the game clock, Dane took the ball from the backfield and charged down the left flank. She was tightly covered from start to finish, yet a quick in-fake gave her the freedom the get a shot off. She launched a low lining strike at the bottom left corner of the net. Loyden made a diving attempt at it, but the shot sailed inches left of the post.
Loyden saved eight of the 15 attempts while Taylor notched one save on the afternoon.
The Eagles continue to the second game of their three-game homestand this Sunday against BIG EAST contender West Virginia. The Mountaineers currently carry a #13 ranking and they square off with the Eagles on the Newton Campus Field at 1:00 p.m.
