The men's golf squad opened their season last weekend at the UNC Greensboro course. The invitational featured 17 teams, most of which hailed from mid-Atlantic America. Results of the tournament are decided by totaling the scores from each player of each participating school. Each school entered five of their top players.
After three rounds of play, Boston College finished in 15th place. However, the notable statistic was not where the Eagles finished, but where they started.
The first round of the tournament was tough for BC. The Eagles' top finisher was Kyle Kelly. Kelley shot a 74 and landed at plus-two after the first day of action. Other notable finishers were BC's Tim Connors and Eric Recher who notched plus-three and plus-six performances, respectively.
Overall, BC started in the basement of the tournament. As a team, they shot a plus-21 309, which was six strokes above the next best team in the invitational.
The second round of action saw the Eagles improve dramatically. Once again, the top two finishers were Kelly and Connors. This round, both of them shot a plus-2 74, which was a stroke improvement for the pair. Recher also decreased his score by two strokes.
As a team, they finished the round tied with Old Dominion for last place. They still held tight to the last spot in the tourney, but they improved their score by nine strokes (from 309 to 300). This improvement paved the way for the strides they made on the final day of the tournament.
Since the plights of the first round, BC remained consistent, tallying a 301 score in the final round. The second and third round average of 300.5 was better than both Georgetown University and Wofford College in the final rounds- two teams that finished above BC.
Ultimately, Connors tied for 24th place in the tournament and Kelly held the 38th slot. Connors made the jump up the ranks with a minus-1 71 in the third round of play. This also helped the Eagles to land in 15th place to finish out the weekend.
It is not where the Eagles began: it was the consistent improvement over the days that marked BC's performance.
The next match for the Eagles is this weekend at the Central Connecticut State University Invitational in New Britain, Connecticut.
