A three-goal effort by Wisconsin forward Amy Vermeulen put lifted the #18 Badgers to a win over the Boston College Eagles. The loss drops the Eagles to 3-2-0 while Wisconsin improves to 6-0-0. Despite launching 21 shots, 14 on net, BC could not put enough past goalkeeper Lynn Murray to take the victory.
The Eagles have netted at least three goals in the past four contests and have averaged 21.5 shots in those games.
The three goals from Badger forward Vermeulen increase her season total to eight.
The Eagle scoring strikes came from freshman Maddie Johnson , junior Katie McGregor and senior Laina Ceddia . Johnson tied the game at one in the seventh minute when she knocked home the rebound off of a free kick by Jenny Maurer .
BC went into the half behind 3-1. McGregor scored next to bring the Eagles back within one goal just after the half. She netted the ball on a play that, again, began with a Maurer free kick.
After another Wisconsin goal, Ceddia closed the goal differential back to one as she scored the only unassisted goal of the match. She made a hard cut back at the top of the 18-yard box, then bent around the defender to free herself up for the goal.
Both McGregor and Ceddia are tied at five points on the season. The junior and senior are second only to freshman Kia McNeill in BC's 2004 points tally.
Another standout statistical performance came from McNeill. She scored two goals last Friday against the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Panthers (leading to the 4-1 win) and took seven shots this afternoon in the losing effort.
Maurer tallied two assists on the play and that brings her season total of assists and points to three. The sophomore midfielder also ripped five shots last game.
The Eagle defense that has been nigh impregnable gave up a season high five goals. Up to this point, Wisconsin is the only team to score more than one goal against BC.
Junior goalkeeper Kate Taylor was busy this afternoon as the Badgers took 17 shots, seven on goal, and found the netting on five of those attempts. Wisconsin keeper Murray was tested by the Eagles, making 11 saves, seven in the second half of play.
The next game for the Eagles is this Friday at 1:00 as they host the Villanova Wildcats. The contest will be the first BIG EAST conference game of the season for BC.
