CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Boston College will face eight teams that qualified for the 2004 NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament. In addition to those NCAA-experienced teams, the 16-game BIG EAST slate highlights the 2004-05 Boston College women's basketball schedule. The schedule was released today by Boston College director of athletics Gene DeFilippo.
The non-conference schedule will kick off with the Spartan Classic, the lone in-season tournament for the Eagles. They will face Western Michigan and then either Michigan State or Central Connecticut State in the second round, with both games being played in East Lansing, Michigan. The home slate is highlighted by tilts with Atlantic 10 powers Saint Joseph's and George Washington. Regional area opponents Northeastern, Quinnipiac, Fordham, and New Hampshire will also take trips to Chestnut Hill this season. In addition to East Lansing, the road slate will take Boston College to visit local foes Holy Cross and Massachusetts, renewing a rivalry that hasn't been played since 1999. Finally, the Eagles will fly west to face nationally-ranked Stanford in January.
After opening the 2004-05 season at the Spartan Classic (Nov. 20-21), the Eagles will open their home season with Quinnipiac on Nov. 24. Boston College will have five of six home games in December, closing out the month with the Dec. 30 tip-off against George Washington. The Eagles will wrap up the non-conference slate with a Jan. 15 match-up with Stanford.
Boston College's BIG EAST schedule begins with a Jan. 2 date at West Virginia. This season, Boston College will play a home-and-home series against West Virginia, Rutgers, Notre Dame, St. John's, and Connecticut. The Huskies come to town on Feb. 26 while Notre Dame arrives for a Feb. 15 tilt. The Scarlet Knights, last year's BIG EAST Championship game foe, return for a rematch on Jan. 26.
The BIG EAST Championship will be held at the Hartford Civic Center March 5-8, 2005. It is the second of a three-year contract. The Hartford venue is the first time in league history that the women's tournament will not be held on the campus of a member institution.
