With the conclusion of the 2004 Summer Olympic Games, Pete Spaulding puts his dreams of a medal on hold for another four years. The final race was the 16th of the Olympic competition in the 49er class. Last Thursday, Spaulding and his crewmate Tim Wadlow finished the race in 10th place, finishing fifth overall.
Their highest position in the games was third. Following the ninth race (which Spaulding and Wadlow won) on August, 20th, they held tight to the third position. The following seven races saw the team slip out of the top three and eventually close out in fifth.
Although it is disappointing to come so close to getting an Olympic medal, this was still a great accomplishment for the Spaulding and Wadlow. Most of the medal winners at the Olympics were significantly older than the duo.
To compare, the US Gold-Medal-Winning men's 470 team's pair had a combined age of 87 years old. It was clear that most teams competing in Athens had more international experience than Spaulding and Wadlow, whose combined age was 58.
