The Boston College Women's Soccer Team lost its season opener to Boston University 1-0 at Nickerson Stadium in Boston. A goal by BU's Lauren Erwin in the 37th minute put the Terriers up by one and they never looked back. With the victory, BU improves to 1-0-0 as BC drops to 0-1-0. Both teams remain 0-0-0 in their respective conferences.
Although BC out-shot the Terriers 14-8, Erwin's goal was enough to seal the victory. Erwin took a pass from back Erica Lee 12 feet out along the left flank. She then floated a ball across to the right side of the net and it landed in the top right corner, over BC keeper Kate Taylor's left shoulder.
BC forward Katie McGregor tallied five shots on the day and three other Eagles - Kia McNeill, Kristin Goddard and Jenny Maurer - had two shots apiece. McNeill put the pressure on BU goalkeeper Stephanie Dreyer early on in the game as she notched the first two shots of the evening for the Eagles. On both shots, she was covered tightly by the BU defense, but she managed to pull off two tough bids at the net.
BC had a couple of great chances to put the ball in the net. The first of which came in the 30th minute when freshman Katie Gallivan served a nice through ball to a sprinting Goddard. Goddard penetrated the defense and shot the ball across to the left side of the net. It was a bit much as the shot sailed wide left.
Another notable attempt came late in the game. Sophomore Jenny Maurer hit a corner kick from the right side and lofted it towards the six-yard box. Back Laura George elevated and hit the ball back across the net. There, McGregor let the ball drop and put a foot on it, attempting to slip it in the bottom left corner of the net. BU keeper Christina Reuter, who played the entire second period, was out of position, but back Susan Marschall thwarted McGregor's attempt. She stuffed the ball and cleared it out of the box.
Along with McNeill, freshmen Maddie Johnson and Katie Gallivan both got starts. When asked how she reacted to the play of the youngsters, Head Coach Alison Foley responded, "I thought the new group did really well. Maddie did a great job winning balls for us and Katie kept possession and gave us great service."
Injuries have, no doubt, held the Eagles back thus far. There has not been much time for the projected starters to get into a groove with each other at practice. "You can tell we are two teams playing out there," Foley commented. "We have not had our starters and that hurts us because we cannot get them going as a group. People are coming back from injury now and we can start getting into a flow this week."
Defensively, the Eagles looked strong. Lindsey McArdle played tough and made some great plays in the air to stop BU's charges to the net. Her play and that of newcomer Laura George made goalkeeper Kate Taylor's job much easier.
Preseason goalkeeper of the year Taylor made two saves, both in the second half. Although BU created many fewer chances at the net, they made one of their two hard attempts count.
The Eagles next face Holy Cross Tuesday. The game will be played at the Newton Campus field at 7:00 pm.
