Cambridge, Mass. -- The Boston College field hockey team will begin the 2004 season this coming weekend. The BIG EAST Champion Eagles will host the Terrapins of Maryland, their soon-to-be conference mate. The game is slated for Saturday, August 28 at Harvard's Jordan Field in Cambridge, Mass. at 1:00 p.m.
BC and Maryland are meeting for the first time since 1997. The Eagles are looking to avenge their 6-1 loss at the hands of the Terrapins. Both BC and Maryland participated in the 2003 NCAA Tournament. The Eagles dropped a 5-1 first round contest to eventual national champion Wake Forest while Maryland lost to Duke, 4-2, in the national semifinals.
Boston College is a co-favorite (along with Connecticut) to finish first in the BIG EAST this season. The Eagles finished with a 15-7 record last season and a 4-1 conference mark. They return 13 letter winners, including 10 starters. Preseason BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year Kristen Madden (Concord, N.H.) and Preseason All-BIG EAST selections Sara York (Watertown, Mass.) and Bronwen Kelly (Mississauga, Ontario) lead the core of returning veterans.
