Softball Takes Two From Holy Cross

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Boston College softball team bounced back from a tough weekend with a pair of non-conference victories over Holy Cross Thursday afternoon at Shea Field on the campus of Boston College. The Eagles pounded out 20 hits on the afternoon, winning 11-3 in five innings before taking the night cap, 9-3. With the two wins, BC stands at 22-15 overall (2-4 in the BIG EAST).
Game One -Boston College 11, Holy Cross 3
Boston College scored a pair of runs in the first and second innings, taking a 4-3 lead through three inning. The Eagles exploded for three runs in the fourth and four more in the bottom of the sixth to seal the victory.
Four different players collected two hits while six players had at least one hit. Five players knocked in runs, including a pair of players with multiple RBI on the afternoon. Outfielder Kimmy Hopkin (Dove Canyon, Calif.) led the offensive barrage with a two-run homerun. It would be the first of two on the afternoon for the sophomore. Junior catcher Lisa Field (Encinitas, Calif.) was 1-for-3 on the afternoon and collected three RBI.
Freshman Britney Thompson (Bountiful, Utah) was the winner in the mound. She pitched four innings and had five strikeouts as she improved to 9-8 on the year. Senior Tekae Malandris (Chula Vista, Calif.) pitched two innings of relief.
Game Two - Boston College 9, Holy Cross 3
The Boston College bats remained alive in the twin bill, collected 10 hits and nine RBI. Hopkin, Ashley Obrest (Elmwood Park, Ill.) and Jenna Macchi (Milford, Mass.) each collected two RBI in the game. Hopkin and Macchi belted bacl-to-back homers in the bottom of the second inning as BC scored six runs to put the game out of reach.
Hopkin once again led the offensive attack with a 2-for-4 plate performance, belting at triple in addition to her homerun. Six other Eagles punched a hit on the afternoon.
Freshman Colleen Reiche (Tucson, Ariz.) pitched 4.2 solid innings of relief and improved to 2-0 on the season with the win.
Boston College will travel to Connecticut for a 12 noon doubleheader Saturday. The Eagles return to Shea Field April 24-25 for BIG EAST series with Seton Hall (Saturday) and St. John's (Sunday).
