General Notes
The last time Ohio State was a host site for NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament was 1993 in St. John Arena. In 1993, Ohio State beat Big East Conference representative, Rutgers, 91-60 ... Two Big East teams in Boston College and West Virginia competed in St. John this weekend. Also, Ohio State made its last appearance in the Final Four in 1993, losing to Texas Tech, 84-82, in the national championship game.
With the victory, Boston College advances to face the winner of #2-seed Kansas State and #7-seed Minnesota second round game to be played Tuesday night. BC will face the winner of that contest at the Mideast Regional in Norfolk, Virginia (Old Dominion University, host).
Game Notes
With the win, Boston College improves to 2-5 all-time versus Ohio State, with both wins coming in the NCAA Tournament. The other win was in the 1999 NCAA Tournament East Region First Round in Knoxville, Tenn., then #8-seeded Boston College defeated #9-seeded Ohio State, 72-59 (3/13/99).
Boston College set a school-record for wins in a season with 27 and now has won nine straight games and 13 of its last 14 ... The Eagles' #3 seed in the 2004 tournament is the highest in school history and they advance to the Sweet 16 for the second straight season.
Boston College now is 6-4 in its fifth NCAA tournament, while Ohio State now is 15-13 in its 13th NCAA Tournament appearance.
Boston College improved to 21-2 when leading at halftime, 23-1 when leading with five minutes left in the game and beat its second-straight nationally ranked opponent ... BC's last win vs. a ranked opponent was on March 8, 2004 in the Big East Tournament against then No. 3 Connecticut.
Boston College senior guard Amber Jacobs scored a game-high 17 points and marked the 11th time this season she led the team in scoring.
Boston College freshman center Kathrin Ress scored 16 points for her fifth straight game in double figures ... Ress also scored a game-high16 points, including the game-winner with 16 seconds left in the Eagles first round win over Eastern Michigan.
Ohio State's loss snapped a seven-game NCAA tournament winning streak in St. John Arena ... The last loss came in the first NCAA tournament game played at St. John Arena in 1984 (Mississippi 77, Ohio State 55).
Under head coach Jim Foster Ohio State now is 5-1 in St. John Arena and 2-2 in the NCAA Tournament.
Ohio State matched a season-low with seven second half field goals ... The 16 second half points were second only to a 14-point first half against Michigan State (1/15/04) for the fewest points scored by OSU in a half this season.
Ohio State senior LaToya Turner hauled down 10 rebounds in her final game as a Buckeye It was her second time this season with double-digit rebounds in back-to-back games after a game-high 11 rebounds against West Virginia ... Tonight was her 99th career game and 92nd start. She finished her career with 1,146 points (No. 18 all-time in school history), 596 rebounds (No. 15 all-time) and 165 blocks (No. 2 all-time) ... Turner, from the Columbus suburb of Pickerington, graduated yesterday with a Bachelor's degree in Art.
Ohio State freshman Brandie Hoskins scored 13 of her team-high16 points in the first half ... She scored 13 of the Buckeyes' first 17 points. The 13 points were second only to an 18-point first half she had earlier this season versus Penn (12/21/03).
Ohio State freshman Jessica Davenport scored a game-high 22 points in the first-round win against West Virginia on 10-of-10 shooting from the floor ... Davenport's shooting performance was an Ohio State and NCAA first and second-round single game record ... It was the fifth time this season she scored over 20 points and four points off her season-high 27 points (vs. Purdue, 1/22/04).
