Women's Tennis Defeats Oklahoma State and Kansas

LAS VEGAS - After falling to 14th-ranked Fresno State Friday, Boston College rebounded with wins over No. 38 Oklahoma State, Saturday, and Kansas, Sunday, to earn fifth place at the UNLV Invitational at Fertitta Tennis Complex in Las Vegas, Nev.
Boston College's record improves to 5-3 with the two wins.
Though the Eagles lost the doubles point to Kansas, dropping two matches, the team responded with four singles wins and the match was called giving BC the 4-1 win.
Szilvia Szegedi (Dumakeszi, Hungary), Allison Ashley (Chestnut Hill, Mass.), Lindsey Nash (Temecula, Calif.) and Emily Hellberg (Spring Lake, Mich.) recorded straight set wins for the Eagles.
In Saturday's match against Oklahoma State, junior Morgan Landes (Huron, Ohio) defeated Zana Masnic in three sets, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3, to propel BC to a 5-2 victory earning the Eagles a spot in the fifth-place match.
The win marked the first in recent memory for Boston College over a top-40 team.
Earning singles wins for BC were Nida Waseem (Karachi, Pakistan), Nash and Hellberg. At No. 2, Waseem won the first set, 6-0, before Jana Karaskova of Oklahoma State retired. Nash defeated Lauren Simmons at No. 5, 6-2, 7-5, while Hellberg also won in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1. She beat Jennifer Poskitt, 6-4, 6-1, at No. 6.
The Eagles took the doubles point with wins at the Nos. 1 and 3 positions. Waseem and Hellberg beat Katya Kolodynska and Karaskova, 8-6, improving to 3-3 on the year, while Szegedi and Nash teamed-up for the first time this season to beat Poskitt and Simmons in a hard-fought battle, 9-8.
The women's tennis team travels to California to face 64th-ranked San Diego, Tuesday, Mar. 2, before facing off against 65th-ranked Long Beach State on Thursday.
