Charleston, S.C. - After a full day and a half of delays due to inclement weather and unsuitable playing fields, the Boston College softball team finally took to action in the Charleston Southern Hampton Inn/Quality Suites Softball Invitational. On the second day of play, BC went 2-1 to improve to 6-7 overall.
BC topped Albany (2-1) and Eastern Illinois (9-4), but fell to UNC-Greensboro (2-0) on the day.
The Eagles opened the day with a 2-1 win over Albany. After allowing a lead-off walk and an RBI single for an early 1-0 deficit in the first inning, freshman pitcher Britney Thompson (Bountiful, Utah) settled to scatter three hits and strike out six in a complete game victory.
Boston College got back the one run it allowed and added an insurance run in the bottom of the second inning. With one out, freshman Ashley Obrest (Elmwood Park, Ill.) singled and stole second. The Eagles then drew back-to-back walks from Lisa Field (Encinitas, Calif.) and Sara Kellner (Sarasota, Fla.). With two outs, BC then reaped the benefits of back-to-back RBI singles from Kimmy Hopkin (Dove Canyon, Calif.) and Jenna Macchi (Milford, Mass.) for the 2-1 advantage that would stand for the win.
In BC's second game of the day, the Eagles threatened in the fifth with a lead-off single by Erin Mackey (River Forest, Ill.) that was squandered. UNC-Greensboro, however, did not squander its half of the same inning, scoring two runs on a two-RBI single by Kara Clouser. The Spartan scoring drive was aided by an Eagle error, wild pitch, and passed ball.
In BC's final game of the day, Thompson came in to pitch four innings of relief for the win as well as aid her cause with a three-run homer to lead the Eagles in a 9-4 win over Eastern Illinois. Thompson struck out five and gave up just one hit on the afternoon. It was her second win on the mound. She also collected four RBI.
The Eagles will return to action tomorrow, facing IUPUI-Fort Wayne at 9 am and Charleston Southern at 11 am.
