The Boston College men and women's fencing team competed at the New England Fencing Championships, held Feb. 21 at Tufts University. The men's squad finished second while the women did not disappoint either, placing fourth.
With 73 total victories in the team rounds, the men's team took second place behind Brandeis University, which finished with 78. BC held the lead until the twelfth round, when Brandeis sneaked ahead, 72-71, and the thirteenth round proved to be unlucky, as the team faced Brandeis in the final round of the day. BC dropped seven of its remaining nine bouts to give Brandeis the Championship. The foil and epee squads placed 2nd over all, while the sabre squad finished third.
Five members of the men's team advanced to the individual finals.
Corban Rhodes, Men's Foil - 5th
Will Lawrie, Men's Foil - 7th
Alex Rios, Men's Epee - 7th
Jon Ton, Men's Epee - 8th
Haynes Ko, Men's Sabre - 6th
The women's team finished 4th, behind MIT, Brandeis and Brown. All three of the weapon squads placed fifth. Junior Tiffany White (Irvington, N.J.) was fifth, and Clara Yum (Wycoff, N.J.) finished sixth in the individual finals.
The team had great success in the Second String Championship, an event open to fencers who did not compete in the team rounds.
