
Men's Swimming Tops Tufts 190-146

Chestnut Hill, Mass. - The Boston College men's swimming and diving team won 16 of 19 events on Sunday afternoon to top Tufts 190-146. Thomas Martz was named the meet's outstanding performer for his individual wins in the 50 and 100 butterfly.
The team of Tim Tully, Brandon Twichell, Martz, and Matt Northrup opened up the meet with a victory in the 200 medley relay. The squad won the event by more two seconds with a time of 1:38.28.
The Eagles continued to swim strong in the long distance events. In the 1000 freestyle, Joseph Maloy took a first place finish with a time of 10:18.47. Billy Schwitter finished third in the heat at 10:22.70.
Martz dominated the sprint butterfly events. The sophomore won the 50 by more than two seconds with a commanding time of 23.66. Martz also took home the 100 by more than three seconds in a time of 52.18. Mark Fennel came in second at 56.11 for BC.
David Herman controlled the middle-distance events for BC. The senior won both the 200 and 500 freestyle with times of 1:47.23 and 4:55.23, respectively.
BC also won both of the breaststroke events. Twichell hit the wall first in the 100 and 200 with times of 1:00.83 and 2:13.72, respectively. David Lin and Jack Naylor took second and third place finishes in the 100. In the 200, Tully and Michael Cartwright finished behind Twichell with times of 2:03.07 and 2:03.34, respectively.
Tully put in an impressive performance for the Eagles. The senior won the 200 butterfly by more than six seconds with a time of 1:57.97. Tully also was victorious in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:00.36.
BC earned wins in the sprint freestyle events. Northrup took both the 50 and 100 in times of 22.39 and 49.11, respectively. Andrew Faughnan finished just behind Northrup in the 100 at 49.18.
In diving, Christopher Wilson-Byrne won the 1-meter dive with 262.73 points. The sophomore earned the meet's most outstanding performance award for his efforts in the event. Wilson-Byrne also won the 3-meter with 240.30 points for the Eagles.
BC (6-2) will travel to New Haven, Conn. for the Nutmeg Invitational on December 4.
