Top-ranked Boston College notched its first tie of the 2004-05 campaign with a 3-3 knot against conference rival Massachusetts. John Adams had one goal and one assist for the Eagles.
BC (4-1-1, 2-0-1) put 54 shots on goal, but UMass (5-4-1, 3-2-1) goalie Gabe Winer made 51 stops before 6,968 fans in Kelley Rink.
UMass senior Tim Vitek's first goal opened the scoring at 5:15 into the contest. Junior teammate Stephen Werner doubled the Minutemen lead with a shorthanded goal just 3:52 into the second period.
All three BC goals came on power play attempts. Down 2-0 in the second period, BC's Ned Havern cut the Minuteman lead to one at 4:18. On the power play, he took a pass from Adams at the point, atop the right circle. Havern hit a hard slapshot over the left shoulder of Winer.
Sophomore Joe Rooney answered with a goal at 9:29 to even the score 2-2. Freshman Pat Gannon took a shot on net and Rooney went in for the rebound. He found himself on the ice outside of the crease, but managed to slip the puck past the left foot of the UMass goalie.
On that goal Rooney, Gannon and Matt Greene all registered their first points of the season.
BC took the lead at 4:09 into the third period when BC senior John Adams netted his first goal of the season. Also on the power play, Adams took a pass from Rooney and took a hard slapshot on goal. The puck hit the shaft of a UMass defender, deflecting the puck into the top of the net.
Vitek registered his second goal of the evening at 9:45 in the third period, tying the score 3-3. The game ended in the 3-3 knot.
BC finished the evening 3-for-8 on the power play as UMass failed to score on three power plays.
BC freshman goalie Cory Schneider (2-0-1) made 14 stops in his third career start.
