Freshman Nicole Reyes' 38th minute tally put Boston College over Brown University 1-0 on Wednesday afternoon. The victory boosts BC to a 9-4-0 mark and extends the Eagles' winning streak to six. BC remains 4-2-0 in the BIG EAST. Brown drops to 4-5-0 with the loss and is 1-1-0 in the Ivy League.
The game started with BC getting a few shots on net. The first four shots from the Eagles came before any Brown attempts on net. All four of the first shots were saved by Brown keeper Hilary Wilson.
The first great chance for BC came in the 35th minute. From the deep right flank, Molly Dane hit a nice service into the box. On the far post, freshman Kia McNeill jumped and hit a hard header into the bottom left corner of the net. However, the goal was nullified as McNeill was nailed with an offsides call, BC's only offsides on the afternoon.
The only goal of the afternoon started from BC goalkeeper Kate Taylor. Ball in hand, Taylor was unchallenged and walked out beyond the 18-yard box. She drop kicked the ball over midfield to forward Kia McNeill. McNeill got her head on it and advanced the ball into the box for a streaking Reyes. Down the right flank, Reyes beat two defenders and put it far post, rolling by Brown goalkeeper Wilson.
On her gamewinner, Reyes commented, "It was really an incredible ball from both Kate [Taylor] and Kia [McNeill]. I got the ball on the run without losing a step and got it past the keeper. I was set up very well on that play."
The Eagles went into halftime up 1-0. BC forced Wilson to make six saves in the first half.
The second half started and the Eagle defense clamped down to preserve the lead. Brown did not get a shot off until the 75th minute of play. In the final ten minutes, the Bears launched three on net, but none connected.
Brown's best scoring opportunity came on a second half throw-in from the right side. Back Jill Mansfield, using the flip-throw technique, got ball into the box. Taylor elevated and had to punch it twice before Katie Gallivan cleared the ball from the zone.
Neither team posted a goal in the second half and BC walked away with its third straight shutout.
On the team morale, Head Coach Alison Foley commented, "We are on a great streak and through thick and thin, the team morale has been incredible. The team chemistry is coming together and we look forward to get some time off."
The Eagles have this weekend off. After playing five games in 11 days, they will not take the field until next Wednesday when BIG EAST contender Providence College comes to the Newton Campus Field. After Providence, BC will travel to Notre Dame next Saturday to take on the #1 Fighting Irish.
