A 72nd minute tally from Kia McNeill put Boston College (14-5-0, 8-3-0) over the Georgetown Hoyas (9-9-1, 5-5-1) 1-0. With the victory, BC advances to the BIG EAST Semifinal game this Friday at 5 p.m. in Storrs, Conn. The game will be played at Morrone Stadium at the University of Connecticut.
BC's opponent for the semifinal match is Notre Dame, as they cruised to a 7-0 victory over St. John's in its quarterfinal game. The loss eliminates Georgetown from the BIG EAST Tournament.
15 minutes into the game, Laina Ceddia had BC's best opportunity to break the scoreless deadlock. Ceddia took service from the left side of th box from Jenny Maurer. She hit a first-touch shot, but her attempt sailed wide left.
The first half ended and neither team put a score on the board. Georgetown out-shot BC 4-2 in the first 45 minutes of play.
At the 60 minute mark, Maurer served another ball into the box. From the right side, the ball sailed over the head of Nicole Reyes and Kia McNeill could not get a foot on it, thwarting a scoring try for the Eagles.
McNeill broke the lock at the 72 minute mark. She scooped up a loose ball down the left side with a defender tightly covering her. McNeill made a hard move to the inside, beating the defender, then ripped a hard shot from 20 yards out. The try hit the net just inside the far post. The tally was McNeill's ninth goal of the season and boosted her point total to 20.
Georgetown had a chance to tie the game in the 85th minute. A freekick along the left side from Karen Waskewich found the foot of Casey McCann. Her shot banked off the left post, still leaving the Hoyas without a goal.
BC goalkeeper Kate Taylor made two saves on six Georgetown shots. Hoya keeper Jade Higgins did no make a save on six BC shots.
