Volleyball Drops A Heartbreaker To West Virginia 3-2

The Boston College volleyball team dropped a heartbreaker to West Virginia (16-10, 3-3) today at the WVU Coliseum. The Eagles battled from down 2-0 to force a decisive game five. Unfortunately the late run was not enough to hold off the Mountaineers as West Virginia took the match 3-2 (30-26, 30-27, 14-30, 28-30, 15-13).
In the first game there were 15 ties and seven lead changes. West Virginia opened the game with a 4-1 lead before the Eagles scored four of the next five points to tie the contest at five. The two teams went back and forth the rest of the game before WVU scored two straight to take a 25-23 lead. The Mountaineers held on to the lead and won game one 30-26. West Virginia kept its momentum going into game two as they took the game 30-27.
The Eagles picked up their play in game three. The team attacked the ball remarkably better in the third game. The Eagles converted 20 kills on 42 attempts for an attacking percentage of .357. Katie Andersen continued her solid play with her second double-double of the weekend. The senior put down a match-high 29 kills and completed 13 digs on the day. BC controlled all of game three as the Mountaineers never took a lead. The Eagles won the game 30-14.
In game four BC fell behind early 10-6. The Eagles fought their way back with four straight points to take a one point lead and from there, the two teams played to a 22-22 tie. West Virginia scored six of the next nine points to take a 28-25 lead. But the Eagles would not give up. Allison Anderson took over from the backcourt with her serve and they Eagles recorded five straight points, including two Andersen kills, to edge the Mountaineers 30-28.
Dorota Niemczewska continued to dominate on both sides of the ball for BC. The sophomore recorded 22 kills, 15 digs, and one service ace on the day.
BC started game five off on the right foot by jumping out to an early 7-5 lead. WVU went on a 6-1 run to take an 11-8 advantage. BC battled back to make the score 14-13. Shardai Davis helped bring the Eagles closer with a key kill down the stretch. The sophomore had an impressive performance both offensively and defensively. Davis completed four block assists and made 14 kills on 23 attempts for an attacking percentage of .391. The comeback was too short to hold off the Mountaineers as West Virginia won the final game 15-13.
BC (17-10, 3-3) will continue BIG EAST play on the road next weekend. The Eagles will travel to Syracuse to play the Orange on Friday, November 5 at 7 p.m.
