A game-winning tally from freshman midfielder Maddie Johnson put Boston College over Central Connecticut State University, 3-1. BC (13-5-0, 7-3-0) finished its 2004 regular season campaign with a bang, defeating CCSU (9-6-0, 5-2-0) in New Britain, Conn.
CCSU scored the first goal in the ninth minute. Kelly Shimmin netted the ball and was assisted by Megan McClements.
Before the half, BC equalized the game. Laina Ceddia scored her sixth goal of the 2004 season (15th point) to tie the game going into halftime.
The 1-1 deadlock was snapped in the 63rd minute when Maddie Johnson netted a 30-yard attempt. She let the unassisted try rip and it found the goal over the hands of Spada. This goal was the eventual game winner.
Jenny Maurer extended the lead to two when she scored in the 74th minute. In the final shot tally, BC out-shot CCSU 18-5.
BC goalkeeper Kate Taylor (13-5-0) made 1 save in the win. CCSU keeper Heather Spada made eight saves, but allowed three goals.
BC hosts the BIG EAST Quarterfinal this Sunday at 1 p.m. The opponent will be determined and released when all BIG EAST matches are played.
